January 2015’s Deadliest Massacre: Boko Haram Attack in Nigeria

Unfortunatelly the year 2015 has started with very upsetting events and massacres. Firstly French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo attack shocked the world. Three people, who later discovered to be members of Al Qaeda, attacked the magazine’s headquarters in downtown Paris and they killed 12 people with cold blood. Last years the most nutritious psyhco killer organization ISIS seems quite for now, but its sibling organization Boko Haram reminded that it is still one of the most dangerous and insane organizations by killing at least 2000 people in Nigeria.

Known as the Baga Massacre, it is a series of attacks and killings done by Boko Haram in 5 days. The killing spree started on 3rd of January and lasted on 7th of January. Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria remained in the shadow of Charlie Hebdo attacks, but authorities state that Baga Massacre is one of the deadliest massacres of our times, which is done less then a week.

In the attacks it is said that at least 35,000 people were effected and they had to leave their houses and forced to move. It is reported that some of the people were shot from behind while they were trying to run from Boko Haram. Even worse, some of them burned alive. Some people threw themselves to Lake Chad to escape from the militia to Chad, even though they can’t swim. So to speak many of them were drowned. It was total madness and unfortunatelly this is how Boko Haram prefers to kill their victims. When finally the guns got quite and Boko Haram militias were exhausted of killing, the town of Baga was looking like nothing but a field of the death. Nigeria authorities reported that after the attacks of Boko Haram, dead bodies were everywhere and it was so much for even the standards of African massacres.

What Does Boko Haram Wants?

Boko Haram is a terrorist organization founded in 2002. Boko Haram literally means “western education is forbidden”. So it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Boko Haram demands to stop western education and secular education in general, which girls and boys study together. In fact, like Al Qaeda and ISIS, Boko Haram strictly forbids girls to get educated anyway. Militia allows only a limited religious education for girls. Boko Haram’s one of the most important action that gained public opinion in western world was kidnapping of Chibok school girls.

In April 2014 Boko Haram had kidnapped 276 school girls of Chibok town. Their conditions are still unkown. In fact it is still unkown if they are still alive. 53 of them managed to escape but the fate of the others is unclear. Experts suggest that the militias could have sold the girls to some kind of sex slave thing.

Boko Haram was founded in 2002 but its real actions started to take place after 2009 when their leader was executed. Since then they have attacked UN military bases, other military bases and did some suicide bombings over Nigeria. Their origins is unkown. More importantly how did they managed to have that weapons and basic military education is unknown. As of January 2015 it is stated that Boko Haram controls 20,000 square miles in Nigeria. That is equal to the total size of Belgium and the Boko Haram territory is still growing.
