Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961)

Breakfast At Tiffany’s is not only one of the best movies of Audrey Hepburn and the year 1961, it is also among the true popular culture icons of all time. People who even don’t like Audrey Hepburn, like this movie. Nearly every single person who lives in a city around the world, has seen an image of Audrey in black dress. It is a true classic and a legendary movie of all time.

The movie is based on Truman Capote novel with the same name. This romantic comedy movie was directed by Blake Edwards. It stars Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly and George Peppard as Paul Varjak. Breakfast At Tiffany’s offers you everything that needs to be in a classic movie. If you never had a chance to see a true classic, you can begin with Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

The movie tells the story of two young people who are basicly not very successful in life but still have faith in life and don’t give up to smile. This is the story of Holly, a café society girl, basicly someone like a call-girl and Paul, basicly some sort of a jigolo. But the movie’s success is not to critisize those two, but to present a segment of their lives. These two young people also seem to be shallow characters, but soon it is realized that they are deeper then they seem to be.

Breakfast-at-Tiffanys-audrey-hepburnBack in 50s and 60s, Hollywood movies were not brave enough to portray harsh lives as they were. This revolutionary act comes after early 70s and hits the sector in 80s and 90s. Before then, everything was a little bit over-stylized and softened. This is how we see Holly and Paul in Breakfast At Tiffany’s. But the makers of the movie were able to turn this obligation into something sweet and tender. Thus Breakfast At Tiffany’s is a true romantic comedy that aims to find the lovely sides of the life. As a result, Breakfast At Tiffany’s remains as one of the true few classics of Hollywood and it is still an inspiration for millions. The true success of the movie lies in the fact that it is a totally unbelievable story, but yet the movie manages us to believe it perfectly fine.

PLOT

breakfast-at_tiffanysAs Truman Capote describes, Holly is not precisely a call-girl. She doesn’t work, has no job at all. But she is accompanied rich men to the best restaurants and night clubs. Those men are used to give her some sorts of gifts, jewelry or sometimes a check for her friendship and escort. So if she feels like it, she sometimes takes those men home for the night.

Paul Varjak is a writer. In fact, he wants to be a writer and works on it. But at the same time he dates with older women who don’t hesitate to support him financially. Basicly he lives like a sort of male mistress. In other words, these two people don’t live lives that a conservative American society doesn’t like much. They are not much appreciated characters of the society neither. But they live their lives anyway.

breakfast-at-tiffanys-Paul Varjak moves into the building where Holly lives. One day Paul rings Holly’s door to get into the building. They are are neighbours and this is how they met. Later Pauş begins to like Holly. She had a troubled childhood and married at 14. Later she escaped to Hollywood to become a star. After trying a few years, she moved to New York. Holly’s interesting life fascinates Paul and he slowly falls for Holly. The thing is Holly also falls for Paul, but she just is not aware of it.

LEGACY AND ISPIRATION

Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) starring George PeppardCapote says he always thought of Marilyn Monroe as Holly for the movie version. But Paramount Pictures casted Audrey Hepburn anyway. However today the critics agree that Audrey’s natural look and cuteness (rather than sexiness) made the movie a true classic. Because Audrey’s natural look re-defined the borders of a café society “call-girl”. Well, in the movie it’s not clear that Audrey is a call girl, but it is very much clear in the book. So in deed, everybody knew that Holly was a call girl.

Breakfast At Tiffany’s is among the very few movies that has become a favorite with every aspect of it. For example, movie’s theme song “Moon River” was also a great hit. The song was composed by Henry Mancini. Moon River was not a big song at all, because it was composed for Audrey Hepburn’s limited vocal. But the song immediately became a greatest hit of the year.

Another important feature about the movie is all the iconic looks of Audrey Hepburn. Her Givenchy black dress is the most iconic look of hers ever. And yet all the other dresses and outfits are true fashion branches of the year and all these stylish Audrey looks inspired a whole generation. Holly’s oversized cigarette holder immediately became a favorite accessories of the decade as well as becoming one of the most iconic images of cinema history. Audrey Hepburn’s Givenchy “little black dress” is still accepted as the most famous black dress ever.

The movie has many awards including 2 Oscars and 2 Golden Globes. Movie also nominated for more. It is in the AFI‘s lists and so on… But the most important accomplishment of the movie is that after 5 decades, the movie still remains one of the favorite movies of many people from different time periods. Well you know, there are not much movies that both a mother and her daughter love. If you missed this one, it means you haven’t seen a true romantic comedy yet.
